Art's Description

About this painting
A painting about urban pollution. I started with a different idea in mind, painting brown over the dry light blue background, but I disliked the results and wiped off the brown. The thin brown paint that remained made an attractive glaze, and its patchy shapes suggested a new picture. I painted this quickly using the brown patches as my guide. Like the image, the title jumped into my head while I was doing it.
The city in this wide format panel looks almost like 1930’s New York. Instead of King Kong we see a dragon to the left, swirling in clouds of brown in contrast to the angular buildings.
Technical details
There are only two colours here. The light blue background was dry before the a liquid brown was painted on top. The brown was then rubbed off with a cloth, leaving the thin brown sky still visible. The buildings were added deftly with a palette knife, as well as the rough form of the dragon. The monster was then moulded and softened using fingers to give it the blobulous texture of a cloud.
Painted May 2007.
